Maintenance on your Heat Pump, Air Conditioner, or Furnace - Is it Nessisary?

A common question I hear is “Do I really need to perform maintenance on my HVAC systems, heat pump air conditioner, furnace?”

Whenever I hear these questions I always think “Of course, you do.”  Just like you need to go to the dentist for check ups, your HVAC system needs this annual check up.  The good news is you’re annual HVAC check up is way less painful than going to the dentist.  In fact, many maintenance items you can do yourself.

Here are a couple of benefits to doing with your annual maintenance.

  • First of all, it helps reduce your heating and cooling cost which saves you money, paying the gas and electric company less every month is always a good thing.
  • It protects your home by ensuring proper and safe equipment operation and it adds years to your equipment life giving you peace of mind.
  • Lastly, it will greatly increased the chances that your pair technician will catch small problems before they become big ones just like at the dentist. So since annual maintenance seems like a good idea and has a ton of benefits here’s a couple of tips to help make your service calls go smooth.

HVAC Maintenance Tip number one

Arrange your service calls before the start of the heating and cooling seasons.  Contractors won’t be as busy and will probably be very flexible with their scheduling.

Seasons for the furnace are the fall months and for the air conditioner are the spring to summer months.  The reason for this is that during the peak part of the season HVAC contractors put a much higher priority on repairs than maintenance.  This makes sense because if your furnace blows up in the middle of the winter, you need to fix right away.  So plan ahead and get them the come when they’re slow and don’t have a lot of work on their hands.  Also, off season is a great time to buy new systems because contractors can become so slow that they may give you a crazy deal on a new system just so they have something to do.

Tip number two

Look for a company that designs, installs and services the type of system that you have.  Full service companies tend to be up to date on the latest advances in the field hence servicing a system they’re familiar with won’t be a problem.

Tip number three

Schedule your air conditioner, furnace and heat pump service visits way in advance.  I always forget to schedule my dentist appointment so I set up future visits quite there.  And six months down the road when I’ve completely forgotten I get a call reminding me.  You could easily do something similar with an HVAC contractor, a simply way, some people do this, it’s by signing a service contract, this will help remind you maintenance needs to be done as well as potentially provide you with a good discount
