HVAC Maintainence - 5 Basic Things You Can do to Extend the Life of Your HVAC System

Performing basic preventative maintanience on your HVAC system can go a long way in helping your system to stay alive for years and years.  Just like  doing a $25 oil change in your car helps protect you from needing the $3000 engine later on.  By doing a little maintanience here and there, you save big money in the end.

The first place you should go before doing any maintanience on your HVAC system is straight to your operators manual.  It will have many step layed out for you and often times tell you which of the below steps are nessisary or not.

Typical things to check

  • Check your thermostat - If you have a digital thermostat, check the batteries to make sure it isnt going to die on you.  Also, make sure it is set right for the different times of the day, so it doesn't heat or cool while your at work and no one is home.  You will want to do this every season to make sure it is heating or cooling to the correct temperatures.
  • Check your humidifier - Make sure it is set correctly for each season, every season is a little different so make a note in your calendar so you dont forget to check this.
  • Inspect the condensate drain - A plugged drain can cause water big water problems and damage parts of your home.  It can also mess with the indoor humidity levels.
  • Make sure HVAC system functions properly - Check they system cycle making sure it starts runs and shuts off properly.
  • Change your filter - This takes a full 60 seconds to do.  It will help w/ your efficiency and keep the air cleaner.

HVAC maintainence isn't all that difficult, but is very important to the life of your HVAC System.  If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, you can easily hire someone to help you.
